FIELD GUIDE

The story

Delano's gas station chicken is a seven-foot fiberglass bird with its wings spread wide, and it has watched Highway 12 traffic since the late 1980s. It stands at the corner of Highway 12 and County Line Road SE, at the edge of the parking lot at Flippin' Bills, a gas station, convenience store and truck stop.
The statue's story starts with two brothers. According to the business's own history, Jon Hanson opened a Tom Thumb store in Delano in 1977 and added fresh broasted chicken in 1980, and in 1987 he rebuilt the store on the site it still occupies. Jon became known as Chicken Jon and his brother Bill as Flippin Bill, who flipped burgers at Saturday grill-outs from a small shack added in 1991.
