FIELD GUIDE
The story
Outside a cheese and gift shop about 25 miles west of the Twin Cities stands a black-and-white cow that Bongards and Explore Minnesota both describe as 20 feet tall. She is Bonnie, mascot of the Bongards cooperative and a photo stop in the small community where the company began.
The cooperative itself dates to a fire. According to Bongards, the town creamery burned down in October 1908, farmers met at the grain elevator that month to discuss a farmer-owned replacement, and ninety signed up as the first shareholders. The new creamery opened in February 1909.
