The story

Flathead Lake has a monster of its own, and since 2024 Polson has had a 25-foot bronze of it on the shore.
The sculpture is the work of John Leon, a Cincinnati sculptor, and was installed in Sacajawea Park in July 2024, according to the Lake County Leader. The paper reported that the project was led by Pat Binger, who wanted to do something for the community and settled on the lake monster; an art committee solicited proposals and chose Leon's design of what Binger called a "whimsical, darling, sweet little monster." The Leader gives its size as 25 feet long and about 10 feet wide from flipper to flipper, and Leon says it is the largest bronze he has made. He told the paper he made it as large as Polson's building code would allow. After a clay model and rubber and wax moulds, about 30 ceramic moulds received molten bronze poured by the Cincinnati Foundry, which welded the pieces back together. Leon's website says it is unofficially called Petra and says the project took just under two years.
