FIELD GUIDE
The story
The Fighting Seabee is a bee in a sailor's hat carrying a wrench, a hammer and a submachine gun, and the Navy's construction battalions have used it as their emblem since the Second World War. The Hoover Institution says Frank Iafrate designed the insignia in 1942. The Navy Seabee Foundation, whose memorial listing was updated in August 2026, places the statue “Outside the gate on the Museum Grounds”, and says large metal Seabees have been placed at military bases and training centres around the world. The Naval History and Heritage Command describes the museum as established in 1947, the second oldest in the Navy's museum system, and located outside the base fence line (as archived in December 2025).
