The story

Outside a Westlake Village cocktail lounge sits a 5-foot-6-inch fiberglass rabbit titled Cottontail Cocktail, one of the Conejo Valley's public-art cottontails. Conejo is Spanish for rabbit, and since the project began the rabbits have been placed in front of businesses and public places around the community. The Conejo Cottontails are sponsored by the nonprofit Art Trek and the Arts Council of the Conejo Valley. According to the project's website, the sculptures were designed by Cate Hartenstein and then painted or mosaic-tiled by local artists, and each was bought and placed by a local business, organization or individual. The project website says proceeds have provided honorariums for artists and supported arts programs for high-risk and poorly funded youth and seniors. KCLU reported in December 2025 that the project started in 2014 and now numbers more than two dozen; the Thousand Oaks Acorn, in January 2016, was still describing a plan for 20 rabbits, none yet placed, with sponsors asked for $5,000 each. This one was unveiled at the grand opening of Crawford's Social, which City Lifestyle reported in March 2024. The article credits it to Bonny Butler in collaboration with Art Trek, and says the restaurant donated $5,000 to Art Trek. The Conejo Public Art location list, updated October 2026, gives the artist as Bonny Sue Butler and the address as 974 S Westlake Blvd. The same list notes that a few rabbits are away for refurbishment, so check it and its map before hunting a particular one.
