FIELD GUIDE
The story
Peter Toth, a Hungarian-born sculptor, set out in 1972 to carve a tribute to Native Americans in every state. His Rhode Island figure, Enishkeetompauog Narragansett, stands in Sprague Park on Kingstown Road. According to Patch in 2020, it was carved from a single Douglas fir in 1982 and is 23 feet tall; Visit Rhode Island describes it as one of at least 74 such sculptures across the country. South County Tourism Council says Rhode Island's was Toth's 42nd, and that he eventually carved one in all 50 states, plus a few in Canada and Hungary. Patch reported that Enishkeetompauog translates to 'all human beings' and that Narragansett means 'at the small narrow point'; South County Tourism says the first word roughly means 'all human beings'. The same Patch article says the stone base was built by Narragansett tribal members, and that by the time the sculpture was installed many local communities and civic organisations had collaborated on the project. South County Tourism adds that Toth met the Narragansett Tribal Council before carving. Patch reported in November 2020 that the town would use a grant to restore the sculpture. The town's park page lists the statue alongside Sprague Pond, a historic cemetery, a World War I memorial and picnic and play areas in the 14-acre park.
