This Big Thing is recorded as still being here.
A 65-foot steel replica of the Eiffel Tower stands beside the Love Civic Center in Paris, Texas. Built in 1993 without a hat, it was topped in 1998 with a large red cowboy hat. Accounts differ on who built it: The Texas Insider credits Boilermakers Local 902 with materials and labor from Babcock and Wilcox, while other sources say a local welders' or iron workers' union. The Texas Insider calls it the world's only Eiffel Tower wearing a cowboy hat.

FIELD GUIDE

The story

Paris, Texas, put a red cowboy hat on its 65-foot Eiffel Tower replica in 1998, in what Wikipedia describes as a competitive spirit toward the replica in Paris, Tennessee.
Wikipedia says the tower was built in 1993 and is roughly one-sixteenth the height of the tower in Paris, France, and that early plans called for it to stand five feet taller than the Eiffel Tower replica of Paris, Tennessee, topped with a cowboy hat, "in a competitive spirit". Roadside America tells it differently: it says the Tennessee tower was moved to Paris, Tennessee and made taller than Texas's, and that Paris, Texas topped its tower with a large red cowboy hat in 1998. The Texas Insider says the original 1993 tower was hatless and that the red hat arrived in 1998; Wikipedia describes it as a shiny red cowboy hat on top of the spindle.
