FIELD GUIDE

The story

Paris, Kentucky, shares its name with the French capital, and in 2021 it added an Eiffel Tower of its own, with a local twist. WKYT reported at the July 2021 ribbon-cutting that the steel replica was built to scale, 20 feet tall, with horseshoes representing the town's thoroughbred history, and that it would be lit at night. Spectrum News quoted the tourism director in 2024 saying it is "not the same size, it's scaled down", with horseshoes the one difference. The Paris-Bourbon County tourism commission's 2024 page calls it a 25 ft replica built "totally by private generous donations".
Before the 2021 ribbon-cutting, LEX18 reported that the tourism commission was raising $25,000 for the tower and had collected about $5,000. WTVQ placed the ribbon-cutting at 8th Street and Main Street, and LEX18 said the tower would stand near what it called "the world's tallest three-story building". The director hoped it would become a landmark for giving directions: "You turn left at the Eiffel Tower," she said. LEX18 noted that an older, smaller tower in front of the farmers market was staying put at that time.
