FIELD GUIDE
The story
Paris, Tennessee, has its own Eiffel Tower: a 60-foot replica at one-twentieth scale in Eiffel Tower Park, which the City of Paris describes as a year-round landmark.
It began in Memphis. For the 1990 Memphis in May festival, whose theme that year was France, Christian Brothers University's engineering department built a near-exact scale model from 500 pieces of Douglas fir and 6,000 steel rods, using more than 10,000 hours donated by students, alumni, faculty and supporters. The Paris Post-Intelligencer reported in 2005 that students kept climbing it even though it could not bear their weight, so the university looked for a new home.
