This Big Thing is recorded as still being here.
A 30-foot granite obelisk topped with a life-size bronze bald eagle forms the centerpiece of Florence Veterans Park in Florence, South Carolina, created by Florence-based sculptor Alex Palkovich. The 6-acre park was dedicated in 2008 as a tribute to Americans who served in 20th-century US wars across all military branches; the Eagle Memorial itself was recognized in 2009 by the American Institute of Commemorative Art as a distinguished public civic memorial. The park also includes other Palkovich sculptures, including 'Home Safe' (a soldier reuniting with family) and 'Alone with Memories' (honoring military losses).
