FIELD GUIDE

The story

Three disembodied dachshund heads, collected from a defunct Bay Area burger chain, are kept on Treasure Island and sometimes leave for parades, punk shows and charity events.
They once crowned Doggie Diner restaurants; SFGate says the chain ran from 1948 to 1986 and that its three-dimensional signs were more famous than its food. The heads are named Manny, Moe and Jack after the founders of the Pep Boys. Their steward bought the first in 1988, according to the Chronicle, and describes himself as their steward. The Chronicle reported in 2022 that a Kickstarter campaign raised thousands of dollars to rebuild their frames and repaint them with automotive paint. They have travelled to New York, an expedition recorded in the 2003 documentary "Head Trip", and SFGate says they have appeared at the St. Stupid's Day Parade and outside the Castro Theatre.

WHAT TO EXPECT
