FIELD GUIDE
The story
The statue of David Crockett in Ozona, West Texas, was meant for a different Crockett altogether. The Crockett County Museum says the figure was originally scheduled to go up in Crockett, Texas, but when no suitable location was available there it was offered to Crockett County, which accepted. The Texas Association of Counties adds that the sculptor, William Mozart McVey, finished it in 1936 and that it was not displayed until 1938.
According to the museum, it was the last of several memorials to Texas heroes paid for from money left over from the state's 1936 centennial appropriation, and the Texas Centennial Commission allowed $7,500 for it. The statue was placed on its base on 31 December 1938 and dedicated on 27 June 1939, the opening day of the 12th annual Rodeo, Race Meet, Stock Show and Sale. The museum says Representative Dorsey Hardeman gave the principal address and Judge C.E. Davidson accepted the memorial for the county.
