FIELD GUIDE
The story
A steel cross, about 77 feet tall by its builders' account, rises beside Interstate 10 at Kerrville, Texas, and the Coming King Foundation describes it as hollow. The Coming King Foundation, which built and runs the garden, gives the "Empty Cross" as a 77-foot-7-inch Cor-ten steel sculpture. Backroads Texas puts it at almost 80 feet. The Christian Post reported in 2010 that once inside, visitors were invited to read a prayer on its walls.
The cross is the end point of a cross-shaped garden within a 24.5-acre landscaped park. The foundation, a non-profit that describes itself as an art museum, lists 14 large sculptures on permanent display by three donor artists, including founder Max Greiner Jr. Other features include a Path to Heaven of 77 scripture tiles in English, Spanish and German, a 600-foot prayer path, waterfalls and a bronze Lion of Judah overlooking Kerrville. The foundation describes the park as a Christian prayer garden, and says it draws about 200,000 visitors a year from all fifty states.
