The story
Lynchburg’s LOVEwork is a shoe big enough to sit in. WSET reported on 13 December 2016 that the sculpture had been revealed outside the Craddock Terry Hotel in downtown Lynchburg: a shoe eight feet tall with the word “love” along its side, which visitors can sit in for a photograph. Organisers told the station it was a way to draw more tourists to the surrounding restaurants and hotels.
Virginia's LOVEworks are oversized LOVE sculptures made for the Virginia is for Lovers campaign, many designed and built by local communities. Liberty Champion reported in 2014 that a LOVE sculpture at the Percival’s Island trailhead was one of 22 in the state. WSET called the design “very fitting for its new home” at the old site of the Craddock Terry Shoe Company. The Virginia Museum of History & Culture says the Craddock-Terry Shoe Company was established in 1888 by John W. Craddock, T. M. Terry and A. P. Craddock and was once the largest employer in Lynchburg. In July 2026 a Lynchburg Museum curator told WSET that the largest shoe manufacturer in the South had once been in the city, and that it was Craddock Terry. WSET noted in 2016 that the hotel on the old factory site still carries the shoe theme through its decor.
