FIELD GUIDE

The story

Ask in Boise City how to find the Cimarron Heritage Center and, the museum's own website says, the answer is “look for the big metal dinosaur.” Cimmy, an Apatosaurus 65 feet long and 35 feet high, stands beside the museum in Oklahoma’s Cimarron County, and a May 2025 OKL magazine feature described it as the landmark that tells visitors they are nearly there.
The sculpture grew out of local fossils. The museum says Bob and Norma Gene Young dreamed of building a true-scale dinosaur like the one Dr. Stovall excavated in Cimarron County, and paid for it with sales of her book “Footsteps”; the iron sculpture was made possible in 1990. Joe Barrington of Throckmorton, Texas, built it. 405 Magazine reported in 2018 that Norma Gene Young, longtime publisher of The Boise City News, commissioned a $20,000 life-sized creation, honouring the dinosaur whose bones, about 80 per cent of a skeleton, came from a dig near Kenton.
