FIELD GUIDE

The story

Chincoteague’s LOVE sign is made from furniture rather than lettering: giant Adirondack chairs that spell out the word. It is one of Virginia’s LOVEworks, a programme of Virginia Tourism that, according to Fun in Fairfax VA, grew through partnerships with destinations. According to Fun in Fairfax VA, the programme began with simple white letters taken to Virginia Welcome Centers. A Virginia Tourism blog post says each chair here is 10 feet tall and weighs over 500 pounds. Fun in Fairfax VA describes the chairs as white, with a heart standing in for the V, and in 2026 called the structure “huge” and climbable, with room for family and group photographs. The chairs stand in Robert N. Reed Downtown Waterfront Park in downtown Chincoteague, where a 2023 Chincoteague visitor guide lists a fishing pier and pavilion and names the oversized LOVE chairs among the park’s photo opportunities, alongside the sunsets.
