FIELD GUIDE
The story
A 20-foot oak figure looks out over the Ocean City Inlet, and has done since 1976. Locals call him the Inlet Indian; the carver, Peter Wolf Toth, named him Nanticoke, and he is the Maryland piece in Toth's Trail of the Whispering Giants.
OceanCity.com says Toth was born in Hungary and fled with his family to the United States in 1956. According to the site, he decided in the early 1970s to carve a sculpture honouring Native Americans for each of the 50 states, working for no fee and giving the carvings as gifts. It describes the Ocean City figure as the 21st in the series, 20 feet high, carved from 100-year-old oak and created in 1976. The series reached number 58 in Haleiwa, Hawaii, in May 1988, and some states have more than one.
