FIELD GUIDE
The story
The stone behind one of America's best-known hoaxes came from Fort Dodge, and the town's museum keeps a full-size copy of the result. The Cardiff Giant, a 10-foot 'petrified man', was 'discovered' by well diggers at Cardiff, New York, in 1869. The Fort Dodge Messenger reported in 2019 that its creator, tobacconist George Hull, had the gypsum shipped from a Fort Dodge quarry to Chicago, where it was carved and treated with acid to look ancient. The original now stands at the Farmers' Museum in Cooperstown, New York.
The Fort Museum & Frontier Village, which the Messenger said in April 2026 is a privately owned non-profit that opened in May 1964, displays the replica. The paper describes it as 10 feet tall and 3,000 pounds, carved from locally mined gypsum, and quoted the museum's executive director saying the exhibit draws visitors from across the United States.
