FIELD GUIDE
The story
A lightning-struck tree in a Punta Gorda hotel car park became a carving that has been repaired by its sculptor half a century later.
Calostimucu is the 10th of the Whispering Giants carved by Peter “Wolf” Toth, according to a website set up for its preservation, which says he carved over 74 between 1972 and 2009. The Punta Gorda Sun reported in February 2025 that the 77-year-old Toth had returned to give the carving a facelift. A longtime resident told the Sun that the tree stood in the grounds of a Holiday Inn, was struck by lightning in 1972, and was carved by Toth, with the landowner, Fred Babcock, giving him $10,000; it was dedicated in 1974. When the hotel was sold, the resident said, the city cut the trunk at the base and moved it to the A.C. Freeman House.
