Big John is a statue that went up in Cape Coral in 1969, the year Big John's Foodway opened, and WINK News says he started as a grocery store's mascot. According to a local supporter interviewed by WINK News, he did not fit the city's sign ordinances and the city told them to get rid of him; after public backing, the city council voted to make him a citizen of Cape Coral. The supporter said children come to have their pictures taken with him. Damaged by hurricanes, he was due to go to a nearby shop for repairs in late 2024.
