FIELD GUIDE
The story
The big steer in the parking lot of Bullshipper's Cafe in Logansport, Indiana, spent decades outside a different restaurant.
It belonged to Mr. Happy Burger, known locally as Hap's, which opened in the Eastgate Plaza parking lot in 1961. According to the Pharos-Tribune, the founder acquired a west-side steer in 1975 after a friend noticed it in front of a defunct eatery in Minnesota, then had a duplicate made for the original location. The paper gives the west-side steer as 14 feet tall and says the steers weigh about 2,000 pounds each, built of fiberglass and plastic stretched on a pipe frame. The west-side steer remains at its original site, and the east-side one has moved.
