FIELD GUIDE
The story
Near the start of the Virginia Capital Trail on Richmond's riverfront, Venture Richmond lists three steel sculptures that depict flowers unfurling. Called 'The Bud and Seed Group', they are by artist David Boyajian, stand between 9½ and 11 feet tall and were installed in May 2010 near Dock and South 18th Streets. Boyajian's own résumé lists the work as a 2010 commission at the Richmond Dock Street Riverwalk.
Venture Richmond quotes the artist, as reported by the Richmond Times-Dispatch, on the idea behind them: 'I think it's the element of nature and the industrial quality of the area.' He described them as 'budding forms' and said the work evokes themes of nature, industry and rebirth.
