FIELD GUIDE
The story
Buck, a 20-foot fiberglass cowboy beside Interstate 10 in Boerne, belongs to a rare breed: MySA reported in 2025 that he is one of only four known Cowboy Muffler Men left.
Muffler Men were giant fiberglass figures that appeared across the United States in the 1960s and 1970s as roadside advertising. MySA, citing Muffler Man enthusiast and YouTuber Joel Baker, says a Venice, California, company called International Fiberglass distributed them, starting with a Paul Bunyan in 1962, and that fewer than 200 are thought to survive. Roadside America, quoted by MySA, gives their height as usually between 14 and 25 feet.
