FIELD GUIDE
The story
A French pun on a place name explains why an Eiffel Tower was reported in 2024 to rise above a shopping centre on the edge of Fayetteville, North Carolina. Bordeaux Shopping Center sits at the corner of Owen Drive and Village Drive, beside Cape Fear Valley Hospital. The centre's own history says it began in 1964 with a grocery store and a five-and-dime, and that the tower spaces and the tower replica came with expansions in the 1970s and 1980s.
According to the Fayetteville Observer in 2024, the tower was installed in 1971. The paper, citing its own 1998 report, says the developer wanted something iconic to set the area apart, and that a local resident remarked, "Well if you're going to call this area Bordeaux, why not make it something French?" Businesses that moved in afterwards, such as Walden's Shoe World, advertised their location as "under the 'Eiffel' Tower."
