This Big Thing is recorded as still being here.
An 8-foot-tall bluebird statue, originally painted orange to promote Florida's citrus industry, was purchased for $100 by motel owners Newt and Wilda Haley, who restored and repainted it blue with 'Newt's Motel' lettering as a roadside landmark. After passing through private ownership (the Porter family) and a community-funded restoration campaign (launched 2009, roughly four years to complete on a $4,500 goal), it was donated to the Vilano Main Street Group and now stands at the Vilano Beach Pier as a public photo landmark.
