FIELD GUIDE

The story

A 32-foot blue horse rears on its hind legs beside the road into Denver International Airport, its eyes glowing red. Officially it is called Mustang; the nickname Blucifer is used by locals, and according to the Denver Post in 2021 the artist's estate considers the demonic reading disrespectful.
The cast-fibreglass sculpture is by Luis Jiménez, born in El Paso in 1940, who learned welding and spray painting in his father's sign shop. Colorado Public Radio reported in 2019 that the red eyes are LED floodlights and a tribute to that shop. The airport gives the height as 32 feet; the Denver Post and Uncover Colorado give the weight as about 9,000 pounds.
