FIELD GUIDE

The story

A Viking stands on a hill above the Sheyenne River Valley at Fort Ransom, North Dakota, and the hill itself has long been argued over.
Pyramid Hill rises about 100 feet beside the small town; the marker quotes a 1975 county history describing a level top and uniformly sloping sides. A historical marker near Fort Ransom says geologists believe it is a natural feature formed by glacial action and erosion, while some area residents think the top third is man-made. The North Dakota Geological Survey, in one of its public notes, says the man-made claim is not true. The marker adds that Native Americans still regard the hill as a powerful place.
