FIELD GUIDE
The story
The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks own a baseball bat that Guinness World Records lists as the largest of its kind in wood. Big Bruce measures 161 inches (13 ft 5 in) with a circumference of 40 inches, and is made from white ash, the same wood as major league bats.
According to Guinness, a computer measured a real Louisville Slugger and a computer-controlled lathe was programmed to those specifications. The bat was turned on the lathe in the summer of 2000 by Cinderwitt and Co. of Wahpeton, North Dakota, and sanded and finished by Quality Cabinets of Fargo. Guinness says it was named after Bruce Thom, then president of the RedHawks. North Dakota Tourism lists it at Newman Outdoor Field, the team's home.
