FIELD GUIDE
The story
A brass bishop on snowshoes towers over Keweenaw Bay at the Shrine of the Snowshoe Priest, a six-story monument on Red Rocks Bluff. It commemorates Bishop Frederic Baraga, who, according to the shrine's foundation, dedicated 35 years of his life to the spiritual and cultural needs of the Ottawa and Chippewa nations.
The idea took shape in the mid-1960s, when county clerk and historian Bernard Lambert proposed a statue of the bishop, Copper Country tourism says. Sculptors Jack Anderson of Lake Linden and Arthur Chaput Jr. crafted it in sections. The hand-wrought brass figure is 35 feet tall and weighs four tons; it stands on a silver cloud and holds a seven-foot cross and a pair of snowshoes 26 feet long. Five laminated wood beams rise from five concrete tepees that Copper Country tourism says represent the five primary missions Baraga founded. The National Catholic Register, in October 2025, calls it a 60-foot statue.
