FIELD GUIDE

The story

Big Gus is a giant chainsaw that, according to Roadside America, sits on a rise pointing toward the highway. Guinness World Records says it is 22 ft 11 in (6.98 m) long and 6 ft (1.83 m) high, was made in 1996 by Moran Iron Works of Onaway, Michigan, and was put on display at Da Yoopers Tourist Trap in Ishpeming. Guinness lists it as the largest chainsaw; Pure Michigan and other writers call it the largest working or running chainsaw.
An older Roadside America visit describes a guide starting the saw, which it gives as 23 feet long and powered by a V-8 engine, and running the chain slowly because the owner worries the chain could fly across Highway 41.
