FIELD GUIDE
The story
On 28 December 1979, two sixteen-year-olds saw something in the bush outside Kilcoy that they could not explain, and a town of two thousand people has been living off it ever since.
Within a year Kilcoy had its first Yowie statue, hoisted onto a plinth in the centre of town as a warning or a lure depending on your temperament, and Yowie branding was appearing on everything from spoons to T-shirts. One of the men who helped commission it was the chairman of the local council, whose son was among those closest to the events of 1979 – which gives some sense of how completely the sighting was absorbed into civic life.
