FIELD GUIDE

The story

Some Big Things are built to stop traffic. This one is built to be sat in.
The Big Chair stands inside Maleny Botanic Gardens & Bird World, on the range above the Sunshine Coast, and it is scaled so that an adult climbing into it becomes comically small – which is the entire mechanism. Visit Sunshine Coast promotes it as one of the region's legendary big things, and it earns that on photographs alone: the chair is positioned to frame the Glass House Mountains behind whoever is in it, so the picture people leave with is not really of the chair at all.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Current Visit Sunshine Coast material explicitly promotes the chair as a legendary Sunshine Coast “big thing”. It sits within the privately operated botanic gardens, so unlike many roadside Big Things it requires paid garden admission to visit.
ACCESS
Navigate to Maleny Botanic Gardens & Bird World, 233 Maleny Stanley River Road, Wootha. Admission is required to enter the gardens. The venue is currently open 9:00 am–4:30 pm daily except Christmas Day; use the attraction parking and follow the park map/signage to the chair.
