The story
The Big Wine Cask was never built. It was painted.
At Stanley Winery in Mourquong, near Buronga on the Murray, somebody looked at a working water-purification building – a plain industrial box – and realised it was already the right shape for a wine cask. All it needed was the graphics. Painted up, the building became a giant box of wine visible across the flat river country, and one of the more inventive Big Things in the country: no fabrication, no structural work, no separate object to maintain. Just paint on infrastructure that was going to be there regardless.
It is also a genuinely appropriate monument for the region. The Sunraysia irrigation districts around Mildura and Buronga produce a very large share of Australia's bulk wine, and the cask – the four-litre bag-in-box, an Australian invention of the 1960s – is precisely the product that trade exists to fill. A giant cask in the Riverland is not a novelty. It is the actual output, at scale.
It was painted out in late 2012, following a corporate rebrand by the parent company Accolade Wines, formerly Constellation Brands. The building is still there and the site still operates as part of the winery, but the cask is gone and nothing has replaced it.
Which makes this the only entry in the catalogue that was erased with a roller. There was nothing to demolish, nothing to relocate and nothing to salvage – a rebrand happened, the livery changed, and a landmark ceased to exist without anything physical being removed at all.

The Big Wine Cask no longer exists as a Big Thing. It was a giant wine-cask facade created by painting a working water-purification building at Stanley Winery, Mourquong, to resemble boxed wine – an adaptation of existing industrial infrastructure rather than a standalone structure.
ACCESS
Historical listing only. Do not navigate to Stanley Winery expecting to see the Big Wine Cask; the site remains an operating industrial winery and the Big Thing facade was removed by repainting in 2012.
