FIELD GUIDE

The story

A giant surfboard marking the entrance to a museum of surfboards.
The collection behind it runs to over a hundred boards, the earliest dating from 1915 and continuing through every decade to modern shapes. That span is the point: 1915 is the year Duke Kahanamoku gave his celebrated surfing demonstrations in Australia, and the boards after it trace an extraordinary technological sequence – solid timber planks weighing tens of kilograms, then hollow plywood, then balsa, then the foam-and-fibreglass revolution of the late 1950s that made the sport accessible to anybody, then shortboards, then everything since.
