The Big Strawberry

Elimbah is in the Moreton Bay region north of Brisbane, in the strawberry country that runs through Caboolture, Wamuran and the Sunshine Coast hinterland. South-east Queensland grows the overwhelming majority of Australia's winter strawberries – the crop runs through the cooler months, opposite to the southern states, which is why supermarket strawberries in June come from here.

Pick-your-own is the reason the sculpture earns its keep. A farm selling fruit at the gate needs unplanned turns off a country road, and there is no cheaper prompt than something enormous and unmistakably the product.

Australia and New Zealand now have a considerable number of giant strawberries in this catalogue – Koonoomoo in Victoria, erected February 2005 and now on a Royal Australian Mint coin; Clevedon and Ardmore near Auckland, both belonging to the same growers; the caravan-shaped one at Omaha Flats; the uncertain one at Windermere near Whanganui; and this.

That is six, which puts the strawberry among the most duplicated subjects after golf balls and apples – a reflection of how many pick-your-own farms use the same solution to the same problem.
