The story
The mower came first. The business named itself after it.
Brisbane Kids puts it plainly: it is only fitting that a business called The Big Mower has a big mower outside, but the oversized mower actually came first, appearing back in the late 1970s, and can now be found outside the Beerwah business. It stands eleven metres tall and 3.6 metres wide.
That inversion is rarer than it sounds and worth stating carefully. The usual sequence is a business commissioning an object to advertise itself. Here the object predated the trading name, which means the mower shaped the business's identity rather than the other way round – and it has since moved to its current site.
A late-1970s date also makes it one of the older survivors in this catalogue, contemporary with the Adaminaby trout and the Kew axe.
Eleven metres for a lawn mower is a genuinely absurd proposition. A mower is a small, low, wide machine designed to be pushed by one person, so scaling it vertically to the height of a three-storey building produces something no other subject would – a familiar object made not merely large but structurally strange.
Beerwah is in the Glass House Mountains country on the Sunshine Coast hinterland, and the mower stands a few minutes from Australia Zoo, which means a substantial passing audience arriving for something else entirely.
On an attribution, the record is silent.
