FIELD GUIDE
The story
There is a giant slouch hat on the front of 70 Sydney Street in central Mackay, and it is not a novelty.
The slouch hat is the most recognisable object in Australian military dress – the wide-brimmed felt hat, one side turned up and pinned, worn by Australian soldiers since the late nineteenth century and carried through both world wars. Putting an oversized one on the front of a building is a piece of visual shorthand that needs no lettering to explain it, which is exactly why it works from a moving car.

WHAT TO EXPECT
The oversized hat is a long-standing Mackay memorial landmark associated with Australia’s service tradition. A dated 2022 photograph shows it on the building, and current Big Things registers continue to list it at 70 Sydney Street.
ACCESS
The Big Slouch Hat is documented on the roof of the former RSL building at 70 Sydney Street, Mackay, now occupied by WES.jobs. The building site is independently map-checked, but the coordinate represents the building/property rather than a surveyed rooftop-hat point. Direct navigation remains withheld until a dedicated lawful visitor/photo-stop arrival is independently verified.
