FIELD GUIDE

The story

A giant slide rule in a university mathematics department is a monument to a technology that vanished within about five years.
The object is associated with the University of Tasmania's School of Mathematics and Physics in Hobart, and the Tasmanian Heritage Council's 2024 comparative assessment explicitly lists the Big Slide Rule among the state's recognised Big Things – which is an unusually formal status for something inside a university building.

WHAT TO EXPECT
The Tasmanian Heritage Council’s December 2024 comparative assessment explicitly lists the Big Slide Rule at the University of Tasmania in Hobart, and an independent November 2024 visitor report records seeing it at the UTAS Mathematics Department. Together with the 2023 foyer report, this supports continued display at the Sandy Bay Maths & Physics building through late 2024. PBT stores the building as a site anchor rather than an exact wall position.
ACCESS
The Big Slide Rule is an indoor wall display in the Maths & Physics building on UTAS Sandy Bay. Independent visitor evidence supports its presence through November 2024, but the University does not publish an evergreen casual-public viewing arrangement for the building foyer. Treat access as restricted to times/conditions when the building is legitimately open; do not disrupt university activity and do not offer direct visitor routing until public access is confirmed.
