Big Bowling Pin – Moonah

This is the second giant bowling pin in the catalogue, alongside the one at Maryborough in Queensland – which was relocated from Toowoomba and restored in 2020. Between them they represent the survival of a very specific piece of mid-century commercial design.

Tenpin bowling arrived in Australia in the 1960s as an American import, and it brought its architecture with it: low wide buildings, angular rooflines, neon, and oversized pins and balls out the front. That look was as much part of the product as the lanes were. Almost all of it has gone, replaced by anonymous boxes in retail parks, and the surviving oversized pins are among the last visible fragments.

A pin is a genuinely good form. The profile is distinctive, the proportions are strictly regulated, and the red neck bands give it a graphic identity that reads instantly.

Moonah is an older industrial and residential suburb along the Brooker Highway, and a bowling centre there serves a local catchment rather than tourists.
