FIELD GUIDE
The story
The Central Queensland Gemfields around Anakie, Rubyvale and Sapphire hold one of the largest sapphire-bearing areas in the world, worked since the 1870s and still fossicked today by anyone prepared to buy a bucket of wash and sit at a sieve. A giant faceted sapphire is therefore not a whimsical choice out here. It is the local product, rendered at a size that makes the point.
The sculpture was built in 1982 and originally stood near Anakie's Big Sapphire and Gemfield information centre, which was the natural place for it: the object and the interpretation in one spot, aimed at travellers pulling off the Capricorn Highway.
That precinct is no longer what it was, and the sapphire has since moved to the Anakie Gemfields Caravan Park on Richardson Street. Exactly when it made the trip is not recorded. Local knowledge of the move plainly exists – people in a settlement this size do not forget where a large gemstone used to be – but nothing in the available record fixes the year, which is a common gap for relocations that happen without a council resolution or a newspaper photographer.
Facet geometry is the thing worth looking at. Cutting a sapphire is about controlling how light re-emerges through the crown, and a convincing giant version has to reproduce a real cut rather than approximate a jewel shape. Whoever made this one had to think about a lapidary problem at building scale.
The move also changed what the object is for. Beside an information centre it was signage. In a caravan park it has become something closer to a resident landmark, which is a quieter but longer life.

The Big Sapphire is a giant faceted sapphire sculpture celebrating the Central Queensland Gemfields. It now stands at the Anakie Gemfields Caravan Park on Richardson Street, a different site from its earlier location near Anakie's former information-centre precinct.
ACCESS
The Big Sapphire is currently associated with the frontage of Anakie Gemfields Caravan Park. Current Central Queensland Highlands tourism explicitly promotes visiting the Big Gem at Anakie Caravan Park, establishing legitimate visitor context. PBT still withholds direct navigation because the preferred exact casual-visitor/photo-stop parking point has not yet been independently map-checked; do not treat the sculpture/site coordinate itself as the vehicle destination.

Current regional tourism material says to look for the giant sapphire out the front of Anakie Gemfields Caravan Park. Supports current presence/site, but not a casual non-guest parking point.
Current destination listing identifies the caravan park, provides a coordinate, lists parking, and explicitly notes the giant gemstone at the park entrance.
