FIELD GUIDE
The story
Three tools, not one, and that grouping is what makes them worth stopping for.
A pick, a shovel and a sieve are the complete kit of a small-scale fossicker on the Central Queensland gemfields, and presenting all three together depicts a process rather than an object. The pick breaks the wash, the shovel moves it, the sieve separates the gravel from whatever is worth keeping. Anyone who has worked a claim recognises the sequence immediately.
The 2025–26 Central Queensland Highlands visitor guide continues to promote them, with the associated site at the Blue Gem precinct on Anakie-Sapphire Road.
Multiple-object installations are uncommon here. Where they occur – the Rockhampton bulls, the Ulupna Island birds, the Gumlu pumpkin and watermelon – the objects are usually variations on one subject. A tool sequence is different: it is instructional, and it tells a visitor what actually happens on the fields.
The fields themselves are among the world's largest sapphire-producing areas, worked since the 1870s, and unusually still open to individual fossickers who can take out a permit and keep what they find. That accessibility is why a set of hand tools, rather than machinery, is the honest emblem.
The two settlements between them now hold three catalogue entries covering the whole industry – the Rubyvale miner, this tool set, and the Big Sapphire Ring in Sapphire Central.
No one recorded the maker, the dimensions or the year.
