FIELD GUIDE

The story

Tīrau does not have a Big Thing. Tīrau has a corrugated-iron zoo.
The Big Ram joins the Big Sheep and the Big Dog on the town's main street, all of them buildings rather than sculptures, all of them clad in corrugated iron, and together they make Tīrau one of the strangest streetscapes in New Zealand. The SPCA opened an op shop inside the ram and describes the structure as one of the country's best-known buildings – which is a fair claim for a shop shaped like a sheep.

WHAT TO EXPECT
The Big Ram is part of Tīrau’s signature corrugated-iron streetscape. SPCA New Zealand opened an op shop inside the building and describes it as one of New Zealand’s iconic buildings, while South Waikato planning policy explicitly protects the town’s unusual corrugated-iron character.
ACCESS
The Big Ram houses the operating SPCA Tīrau Op Shop at 61–63 Main Road. The Ram building is map-checked separately from the established Tīrau Information Centre visitor/parking precinct. Navigate to the visitor precinct and approach the Ram on foot rather than treating the building frontage as a parking bay.
