The story
It began as a plan for a modest set of public amenities and ended as one of the most striking information centres in New Zealand.
The Dog at Tīrau is a giant corrugated-iron sheepdog that functions as the town's information centre and amenities block, designed and built by the Tīrau community with funding from the South Waikato District Council, specifically to complement the neighbouring sheep-shaped buildings.
That origin is the best thing about it. Somewhere in the process of planning a modest amenities building, a community decided the answer was a dog the size of a house – and then built it themselves. Very few civic amenities anywhere have that provenance.
The pairing with the sheep is the point. A sheepdog beside a sheep is a working relationship rather than two unrelated animals, and it turns a main street into a scene. The ram followed later, now housing an SPCA op shop.
Corrugated iron gives the whole cluster its character. Curved iron produces exactly the right texture for a rough-coated dog, the material is unmistakably New Zealand, and the town has committed to it thoroughly enough that South Waikato planning policy explicitly protects Tīrau's corrugated-iron character.
The council calls the Dog, the Sheep and the Ram landmarks of the district, and together they have made a highway junction town into a destination in its own right rather than a place people drive through on the way to Rotorua.
Nobody wrote down its age.
