The story

It is a purple number two, it is 1.8 metres across, and it is at a mini-golf course.

The Big Pool Ball stands at Yarralumla Play Station, a long-running miniature golf and play attraction in one of Canberra's inner suburbs. The choice is faintly illogical in a pleasing way – a pool ball advertising a mini-golf venue is one game's equipment standing in for another's – but it works on the level that matters: a single enormous sphere in a strong flat colour is visible from the road and impossible to mistake for anything else.

The number two is what makes it a specific object rather than a generic ball. Pool balls are individually identifiable by colour and number, and rendering one of them exactly, at scale, turns an abstract shape into a recognisable thing – the same instinct that makes a giant Coke bottle better than a giant cylinder.

Canberra is not richly supplied with Big Things. The city's best-known entry is Big Swoop in Civic; this one is smaller, older in feel and much less publicised, which puts it in the category of Big Things that exist for the people who already live nearby rather than for tourists.
