FIELD GUIDE
The story
Most oversized objects are built to sell something. This one was built to make a council uncomfortable.
The Big Poo was born in Kiama in 2002 – five metres of foam, unambiguous in shape, unveiled as a protest sculpture campaigning for wastewater to be reused rather than pumped into the ocean. It was reported at the time in terms that made the intent plain: a five-metre poo dumped outside Kiama.

WHAT TO EXPECT
The Big Poo left Kiama and became a mobile environmental-campaign prop. Its own campaign history records transfer to the Clean Ocean Foundation in 2005, and its campaign website says that between outings it is 'safely at home with the keeper of the Poo'. After a 2019 Merimbula appearance, Clean Ocean Foundation was still touring the original Big Poo on a trailer at Torquay during the Bells Beach surf event in April 2023. It has no public display location.
