FIELD GUIDE
The story
It is a working grain silo. It is also a ten-metre can of pale ale, and it was built to be a Big Thing on purpose.
The Grifter Brewing Co. expanded its Marrickville operation in 2025 and installed a large grain silo as part of it – necessary, unremarkable brewing infrastructure. Then the team painted it as a giant can of their Pale Ale, and the Big Orange Goblin came into existence.
What makes it notable is the deliberateness. Almost every object of this kind became a landmark by accident: a business put up a sign, decades passed, and the community adopted it. The Grifter skipped the decades. The brewery describes the silo openly as its new Big Thing, and Destination NSW picked it up as one – a piece of functional plant designed from the outset to enter a tradition it had not yet earned a place in.
That is either cheating or a perfectly honest evolution of the form, depending on how romantic you are about the genre. The argument for it is that the object is genuinely doing a job. This is not a fibreglass replica bolted to a roof; it is holding grain, and the paint is the only part that is decorative.
It also puts a Big Thing somewhere the tradition has rarely reached. These are overwhelmingly rural and highway objects; an inner-city Sydney suburb having one, on an operating industrial site on Enmore Road, is a genuine novelty.
Because it is brewery plant rather than public sculpture, access follows the brewery.
