The story
Fifteen metres high, twelve metres across, four levels inside – the biggest of Australia's Big Fruit, and it is closed.
The Big Orange stands on the Old Sturt Highway outside Berri in the South Australian Riverland, and South Australia Tourism confirms both facts plainly: it remains standing and remains the largest, and the attraction inside it is shut. You can still view it clearly from the road, and it makes a great photograph.
The scale is genuinely remarkable. Four storeys inside a sphere twelve metres in diameter means this was never a sculpture – it was a building, with floors, a viewing level and an interior visitors climbed. Very few Big Things in either country were ever that ambitious, and almost none of them are still standing.
The Riverland is the right place for it. Irrigation from the Murray turned this country into one of Australia's major citrus districts from the early twentieth century, and Berri was at the centre of it – the town's name is on juice bottles across the country.
Its closure is the ordinary end for a walk-in attraction. Public access to a four-level structure carries compliance, insurance and maintenance obligations that a solid sculpture does not, and once the visitor numbers no longer cover them the doors shut while the object remains.
So it now occupies an unusual position: fully intact, entirely visible, and no longer enterable. The catalogue records it as restricted for exactly that reason.
The person responsible and its age were never written down.

South Australia tourism confirms the Big Orange remains standing and is the largest of Australia's Big Fruit, but the attraction itself is closed. It can still be viewed clearly from the road.
ACCESS
The Big Orange structure survives but is closed. Do not treat its landmark coordinate as a stopping instruction until a safe public viewing/photo point is verified.
