FIELD GUIDE
The story
A giant Dunlop tyre spans the Sturt Highway at the South Australian border, and it is effectively a gateway arch.
The object stands near the Yamba quarantine station at the state's eastern edge, where every vehicle entering South Australia from New South Wales and Victoria is stopped and checked. That checkpoint exists for a specific and serious reason: South Australia is one of the few places in the world still free of phylloxera and fruit fly across large areas, and the quarantine stations are the physical defence of a horticultural industry worth a great deal. Drivers are required to surrender fruit and vegetables before crossing.
So the tyre is doing something unusual for a Big Thing. It marks a border rather than a business, and it is seen by a captive audience in a queue – arguably the most reliable audience any roadside object can have, since nobody passes it at speed.
Spanning the road rather than standing beside it is the other good decision. A tyre is a ring, and a ring at that scale over a highway becomes a portal you drive through, which is a considerably stronger effect than an object on a verge.
A photograph dated 24 April 2024 confirms it remains in place, and PIRSA confirms the Yamba quarantine station is still an active border checkpoint.
Because it belongs to a working quarantine facility, this record marks access restricted – it is seen from the road while queueing, not visited.
Not documented anywhere: any date at all and the person responsible.

ACCESS
The Big Dunlop Tyre is at an active Sturt Highway quarantine/checkpoint context. It may be visible in transit, but visitors must not stop specifically for the landmark or interfere with traffic or biosecurity operations.
A safe stopping/viewing point for the Big Dunlop Tyre has not been published. Do not stop specifically for the landmark at the active highway quarantine checkpoint.
