FIELD GUIDE
The story
An eight-metre prospector stands outside a mini golf course on the edge of Ballarat, and the subject is entirely earned.
The Big Miner is a tribute to the diggers of the Victorian gold rush, and Warrenheip sits on the outskirts of the town where that rush produced its most consequential moment. The Eureka Stockade of December 1854 – miners rebelling against licence fees and the administration of the goldfields – is one of the founding episodes of Australian political history, and Ballarat has been arguing about what it means ever since.
