FIELD GUIDE
The story
Most Big Things are made by sign-writers, fibreglass fabricators or enthusiastic locals. This one is by John Olsen, among the most celebrated Australian painters of his generation.
Its real title is Ceratodus, after Neoceratodus forsteri – the Queensland lungfish, a freshwater survivor that has changed remarkably little in well over a hundred million years and which lives in the Burnett and Mary river systems. Olsen made it from recycled metal in 2003–04, and the finished work is just under four metres long, recorded by Bundaberg Regional Council at 3.96 by 1.955 by 1.2 metres.

WHAT TO EXPECT
The Big Lungfish, formally titled Ceratodus, is a nearly four-metre recycled-metal sculpture at Riverside Parklands on Quay Street, Bundaberg, measuring 3.96 × 1.955 × 1.2 metres. Its expressive skeletal form makes it as much public art as roadside novelty, and it is classified Extended rather than Core.
ACCESS
Navigate to Riverside Parklands on Quay Street and use lawful CBD/park access. The current project pin identifies the park rather than pretending to locate the sculpture to the metre; approach through the public riverfront parkland/boardwalk.
